Welcome to Flowdeck

Flowdeck turns a cockpit image into a flow you can see, practice, and share. Draw each pilot’s flow step by step on your own aircraft’s panels, then test yourself by finding every step from memory.

About this guide. Flowdeck runs in a web browser on Mac, PC, iPad, and Android tablets. This guide says click; on an iPad or other touchscreen, tap instead. Shortcuts are shown for Mac; you can switch them in Keyboard shortcuts.

Get started

Open the editor, install Flowdeck on a tablet for offline use, and learn where everything is.

Open the editor

  1. On the Flowdeck home page, click Start Flowing Now.
  2. The first time you open the editor, an interactive guide walks you through the canvas, drawing tools, roles, steps, review, and export. Follow it, or skip it to start drawing right away.

You can create flows without an account. To see the interactive guide again, click in the navigation bar, then click Restart Interactive Guide.

What’s new. A green dot on means Flowdeck has new features. Click it to read about them.

Use Flowdeck offline on iPad

Add Flowdeck to the Home Screen of an iPad or Android tablet to use it like an app, even without an internet connection. It opens straight to your flow library.

On iPad

  1. Open flowdeck.es in Safari.
  2. Tap , then tap Add to Home Screen.
  3. Tap Add. Open Flowdeck from its icon on the Home Screen.

On an Android tablet

Create flows

A flow is a sequence of steps drawn on a cockpit image, with a separate sequence for each pilot.

Add a cockpit image

Every flow starts with a picture of the panels it covers. Use your own image, or start from a built-in Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 cockpit.

A Boeing 737 overhead panel in the Flowdeck editor, with no steps drawn yet.
An overhead panel, ready for its first step.

Do any of the following:

  • Upload your own image: On the empty canvas, click Upload Cockpit Image, then choose a PNG, JPG, or PDF. You can also choose a .flowdeck file here to open a saved flow.
  • Use a built-in cockpit: On the empty canvas, click A320 or B737.
  • Save your image as a preset: In the inspector, under Cockpit Image, click , name the preset, then save it. Your presets appear on the empty canvas the next time you start a flow.
  • Remove a preset: On the empty canvas, move the pointer over the preset, then click .
  • Replace the image: In the inspector, under Cockpit Image, click Replace Image. Your steps stay where they are.

Tip: Use the sharpest image you have. It’s the base of everything you draw and export.

Name the flow and choose roles

Each flow has two sequences: one for the Pilot Flying PF and one for the Pilot Monitoring PM. Steps you add go to the active sequence.

  • Name the flow: In the inspector, under Details, enter a Flow Name (for example, Before Start) and an Aircraft Model (for example, A320).
  • Choose the active sequence: Under Active Sequence, click PF or PM, or press Q to switch between them.
  • Use CM1 and CM2 instead: Under Role Naming, click CM1/CM2. Flowdeck labels the sequences Commander 1 and Commander 2 everywhere, including exports.
  • Hide a sequence on the canvas: Click next to the sequence’s name. Click it again to show it.
  • Remove a whole sequence: Click next to the sequence’s name.

Draw steps

Choose a tool in the toolbar, then click the cockpit where each step happens. Flowdeck numbers the steps and calculates a smooth path between them.

  • Step1Adds a numbered circle connected to the previous step by an arrow. Use it for most flows.
  • Line2Draws an arrow with no circle. Click where the arrow starts, then click where it ends.
  • Circle3Adds a numbered circle with no line. Circles are what Flashcards quiz you on.
  1. In the inspector, choose PF or PM under Active Sequence.
  2. Click in the toolbar.
  3. Click the first switch or panel on the cockpit, then each following one in order.
  4. Name each step in the inspector. See Edit and organize steps.
  5. Switch to the other role and draw its sequence the same way.

A flow uses either Step points or Line and Circle points. After you add one kind, the other tools are unavailable until you clear the flow.

Edit and organize steps

The inspector lists every step in each sequence. Change a step there or directly on the canvas.

  • Name a step: Click the step’s text in the inspector, type a name such as GENS 1,2 - ON, then press Return.
  • Name steps quickly: While naming a step, press Tab to move to the next step, or Shift-Tab to go back.
  • Change a step’s number: Click its circle in the inspector or on the canvas, then enter up to three characters, such as 1A.
  • Reorder steps: Drag a step up or down in the inspector by its handle.
  • Move a step: Drag its circle to a new place on the cockpit.
  • Curve a line: Drag the middle of a line on the canvas. To straighten it again, move the pointer over the step in the inspector and click Reset curve.
  • Add sub-items: Move the pointer over a step in the inspector, click , then type the detail. Sub-items appear indented under the step.
  • Delete a step: Click next to the step, then click Delete to confirm.
  • Undo a change: Click in the toolbar or press ⌘Z.

Tip: Steps you don’t name are called Step 1, Step 2, and so on. When you start typing, the placeholder clears so you can enter the real item.

Add INOP and text stickers

Stickers sit on the cockpit image without becoming steps. Use them to mark inoperative equipment or to label an area.

  1. Click for an INOP sticker (or press I), or for a text sticker (or press T).
  2. Click the cockpit where the sticker goes. For a text sticker, type the text, then press Return.

To move a sticker, drag it. To change or remove one, right-click it (on a touchscreen, double-tap it), then choose Edit text or Remove sticker. Press Esc to stop placing stickers.

Change how a flow looks

Match your airline’s training material, or make a busy panel easier to read. These settings are saved with the flow and used in exports.

  • Change role colors: Click the PF or PM color in the toolbar, then choose a color. PF is green and PM is yellow until you change them.
  • Make lines and labels thinner or thicker: Click or in the toolbar.
  • Move the arrowheads: Click to switch between arrowheads at the end of each line and at its midpoint.
  • Zoom: Click or , or press ⌘+ and ⌘−. Click the percentage or press ⌘0 to return to 100%. On a touchscreen, pinch.
  • Pan around the cockpit: Hold Space and drag, or drag with the middle mouse button.
  • See more of the cockpit: Click or press ⌘B to hide the inspector.

Crew and context

Flows don’t happen in isolation. Add the notes, crew signals, callouts, and outside events that shape when each step happens.

Open a step’s options

Right-click a step’s circle on the canvas. On an iPad or other touchscreen, double-tap it. The menu includes:

  • Add noteAttaches a Post-it note to the step.
  • Set step as triggerMarks the step that signals the other pilot.
  • Start checklistMarks where a checklist is called for.
  • Add calloutAdds words that are spoken aloud during practice.
  • Add environmental eventAdds an outside event, such as a clearance, that the step depends on.
  • Delete pointRemoves the step.

Choose the same command again (for example, Remove note) to take it off the step.

Add notes

Notes keep the diagram clean while holding the detail behind a step, such as an FCOM reference, a limitation, or a company SOP warning.

Rest the pointer on a step to read its note.
  1. Right-click the step (or double-tap it), then choose Add note.
  2. Type the note. Press Return to finish, or Shift-Return to start a new line.

To read or edit a note later, move the pointer over the step.

Use triggers and checklists

A trigger is a step that tells the other pilot to continue, such as the PM setting the lights before the PF moves on. A checklist marker shows where a checklist is commanded.

The PF flow waits for the PM’s trigger step before it continues.
  • Make a step a trigger: Right-click the step, then choose Set step as trigger. A PF trigger is drawn as a rounded square , and a PM trigger as a pentagon .
  • Mark a checklist: Right-click the step, choose Start checklist, then enter the checklist’s name (for example, Before Start) in the inspector.

During practice, when a trigger step is completed, the other pilot sees a full-screen signal to proceed. When a checklist step is reached, the screen shows Checklist Commanded with the checklist’s name.

Add callouts and events

Callouts are words a pilot says at a step, such as “V1” or “Rotate.” Environmental events are things outside the cockpit that a step waits for, such as taxi clearance or the cabin secure chime.

An environmental event pauses the flow until you acknowledge it.
  1. Right-click the step, then choose Add callout or Add environmental event.
  2. In the inspector, type the callout or event above the step.
  3. Choose when it happens, using the Before and After buttons next to it.
TypeBeforeAfter
CalloutSpoken as soon as this becomes the next step.Spoken right after you click the step. This is the default.
EventBlocks the step until you click Acknowledge & Proceed. This is the default.Shown right after you click the step.

Callouts are read aloud by your device’s built-in voice. Turn up the volume to hear them.

Practice

Reading a flow builds passive memory. Practice modes hide the lines and ask you to find each step yourself, directly on the cockpit.

Practice in Review Mode

Review Mode hides the flow. Click each step where you remember it, in order. Correct clicks reveal the step; misses are counted but don’t stop you.

Review Progress in the inspector shows the steps found so far and any misses.
  1. Click Start Review in the toolbar.
  2. Under Practice Role, choose Both Roles, PF, or PM. If you choose one role, Flowdeck plays the other pilot’s steps for you.
  3. Click Start from Beginning, or choose a step in the list to start from there.
  4. After the countdown, click each step on the cockpit in order. A check mark means you found it; a cross means you missed.
  5. When one role is done, select the other role in the inspector and continue.
  6. When every step is found, click Check Result.

Your final score shows the percentage of steps found, with correct steps and misses for each role. The original flow appears over your attempt so you can see where you went wrong. Click Back to Edit to return to the editor.

Each click is checked against where the step really is.

Tip: Practicing a single role is useful before a sim session: you fly your part while Flowdeck plays your partner’s, including their triggers and callouts.

Review Mode needs a Review Mode or All Access plan. See Plans and purchases.

Get a hint

When you’re stuck in Review Mode, click Hint in the toolbar. You get two hints for each step.

  1. First hint: Shows the name of the next step.
  2. Second hint: Zooms in and pulses a ripple on the step’s location, without showing the rest of the flow.

Drill with Flashcards

Flashcards help you learn where each control is. A card shows a switch’s name, and you find it on the cockpit. Flashcards use the flow’s circle points, so the Flashcards button appears when a flow has them.

The card at the top shows the switch to find and your progress.
  1. Draw the switches you want to learn with the Circle tool, and name each one.
  2. Click Flashcards in the toolbar. To mix up the order, turn on Shuffle.
  3. Click the switch named on each card. Dots on the card turn green for correct answers and red for misses.
  4. At the end, see how many you found. Click Retry to go again, or Exit.

Flashcards need a Review Mode or All Access plan.

Fly a route in Flight Mode

Flight Mode queues saved flows and runs them back to back in Review Mode, so you can practice a full flight, from Before Start to Parking, in one session.

  1. Click in the toolbar.
  2. Under Available Flows, click each flow to add it to Your Route. Drag flows in Your Route to change their order.
  3. To reuse this route later, enter a name (for example, A320 Full Flight) and click Save Route as Preset. Saved routes appear under Saved Presets.
  4. Start the route. A progress indicator at the top shows which flow you’re on.
  5. After each flow, Flowdeck shows the next one. When the last flow is done, you see Flight Complete.

To stop early, exit Flight Mode. Flight Mode isn’t available during a collaborative session, and needs a Review Mode or All Access plan.

Practice with a partner

Collaborative Review lets two pilots practice the same flow at the same time, each on their own device. One flies PF and the other PM, and both see each other’s progress live.

Host a session

  1. Open the flow, then click in the toolbar.
  2. Under Your Role, choose PF or PM, then click Create Room.
  3. Share the link or room code with your partner, by message, email, or Teams.
  4. When your partner has joined, click Start Review.

Join a session

  1. Open the link your partner sent. Or click in the editor and enter the room code (for example, alpha-runway-4291) or paste the link.
  2. Choose the role your partner didn’t take, then click Join. You don’t need an account.
  3. Wait for the host to start the review.

During the session, a status bar shows both pilots’ progress. When your partner clicks a panel, a ripple shows where. If you allow microphone access, you can talk to each other; click to mute. When you’re both done, compare your scores. Click Leave to end the session.

The host needs a Review Mode or All Access plan. Guests join for free.

Save, share, and export

Keep your flows organized, move them between devices, and turn them into images, PDFs, and videos for your crew.

Save flows and use your library

Click Save Flow at the bottom of the inspector, or press ⌘S. Saved flows appear in Your Flight Bag on the Flowdeck home page, or in your library when you open Flowdeck from the Home Screen.

  • Open a flow: Click it in the library.
  • Delete a flow: Click its delete button, then click again to confirm.
  • Start a new flow from the library: Click New Flow.

Important: Flows are stored in this browser on this device. Your Flowdeck account keeps your purchases, not your flows. Clearing your browser’s website data removes them, so back up or sync the flows you want to keep.

Organize flows in folders

Folders in the library work like folders on an iPhone Home Screen.

  • Create a folder: Drag one flow onto another. Flowdeck creates a folder named New Folder that holds both.
  • Add a flow to a folder: Drag the flow onto the folder.
  • Rename a folder: Open the folder, click next to its name, type a name, then click Done.
  • Remove a flow from a folder: Open the folder, then drag the flow onto All Flows.

A folder disappears when its last flow is removed. A flow linked to debrief errors shows how many on its card.

Import, export, and back up

A .flowdeck file holds everything in a flow: the cockpit image, both sequences, stickers, notes, and appearance settings. Use it to share a flow or move it to another device.

  • Export one flow: In the editor, click Export .flowdeck.
  • Back up every flow: In Your Flight Bag, click Download All. Flowdeck saves a .zip file with all your flows.
  • Import flows: In Your Flight Bag, click Import, then choose one or more .flowdeck files or a .zip backup.
  • Open a .flowdeck file in the editor: On an empty canvas, click Upload Cockpit Image and choose the file. If you open several flows at once, they’re all saved to your library and you choose which one to edit.

Sync with Google Drive

Sync keeps the same flows and folders on all your devices, using your own Google Drive.

  1. In the editor, click in the navigation bar.
  2. Sign in with Google and allow Flowdeck to access the files it creates.
  3. On your other device, click too. Your flows download automatically.

Each time you sync, Flowdeck keeps the most recently changed copy of every flow. When you see Sync Complete, your flows are up to date.

Lock a flow

Locking a flow prevents accidental changes. You can still practice a locked flow.

  • Lock a flow: Click in the navigation bar.
  • Protect it with a password: With All Access, Flowdeck asks for an optional password when you lock a flow. Others who receive the flow need it to unlock it. Leave it empty for no password.
  • Unlock a flow: Click . If the flow has a password, enter it, then click Unlock.

Export images, PDFs, and videos

Exports include a header with the flow’s name and aircraft and, if you like, a legend listing every step.

  • PNGA high-resolution image for slides, messages, or printing.
  • PDFA document for your training binder or EFB.
  • MP4A video in which the flow draws itself one step at a time. It plays anywhere, from WhatsApp to your LMS.
  1. To include the legend, turn on Include Steps in Export in the inspector.
  2. Click PNG, PDF, or MP4 at the bottom of the inspector.
  3. For an MP4, keep the tab open while Flowdeck renders the video. To stop, click Cancel Export.

Export settings

Click in the navigation bar. These settings apply to PNG, PDF, and MP4 exports.

  • Video Duration: Drag the slider between Fast and Slow to set how long each step takes in the video, from 100 to 2000 milliseconds. Long, slow videos of large flows can use a lot of memory; Flowdeck warns you when that’s likely.
  • Operator Logo: Click Upload Logo and choose your airline’s or school’s logo. It appears at the top right of every export, for all your flows.
  • Legend, steps per column: Drag the slider to fit between 3 and 20 steps in each legend column.

Free exports are lower resolution and carry a watermark. To export a flow at full resolution without the watermark, click Remove watermark in the inspector, or get All Access. MP4 export is a per-flow purchase or included in All Access. Buy once you’re happy with the flow: a single-flow purchase applies to the flow as it is.

Debrief

Log your mistakes right after a sim session, spot patterns over time, and walk into the next session knowing what to focus on. Debrief is included in All Access.

Log a session

On your phone, Debrief is a short guided wizard. It takes about three minutes while the session is still fresh.

  1. On the Flowdeck home page, tap Add Debrief.
  2. Choose the type of session: OCC, MCC, Type Rating, Line Training, or your own.
  3. Choose how you feel about it: Frustrated, Regular, or Good.
  4. Describe what went wrong, in your own words.
  5. Choose the closest category and how serious it was.
  6. Optionally, link the error to a Flowdeck flow and add the manual chapters to review, such as FCOM PRO-NOR-SOP-04.
  7. Add another error, or finish. You see Session logged.
  • SOPDid something different from the procedure.
  • KnowledgeDidn’t know the correct answer.
  • CRMCommunication or coordination with the other pilot.
  • TechnicalDoubt about the system or aircraft.
  • Noticed itYou caught it yourself.
  • Took effort to recoverIt took work to get back on track.
  • Affected flight safetyShown first in your pre-session brief.

To use your debriefs on other devices, tap Sync with Google Drive in the wizard.

Review your errors

On a computer or iPad, click Access Debrief on the home page to open the full dashboard. Use the tabs at the top to switch between Sessions, All Errors, and Pre-Brief.

  • See your trends: The overview shows totals such as average errors per session and resolution rate. After you log at least two sessions, charts show your errors per session, severity over time, and mood history.
  • Find errors: In All Errors, filter by category, severity, or status.
  • Analyze an error: Select it, then add the flight phases it happened in (Pre-flight through Parking, or your own), the root cause, your action plan, and manual references.
  • Practice the related flow: Choose a flow under Link to Flowdeck, then open it to practice.
  • Close an error: Mark it Resolved when you’ve worked on it.
  • Add notes to a session: Select the session, then add examiner feedback or other observations.

Brief before the next session

The Pre-Brief tab gathers every unresolved error from previous sessions, most serious first. For each one, it shows the manual chapters to review and the Flowdeck flows to practice.

Tip: Open Pre-Brief the evening before a sim session, then practice the listed flows in Flight Mode.

Account and plans

Drawing and exporting flows is free. Plans add practice modes, full-resolution exports, and Debrief.

Troubleshooting

I bought a plan, but it’s not available on another computer

Open a purchase option, click Already paid? Restore, and enter the same email address you used at checkout. See Plans and purchases.

My flows aren’t on my other device

Signing in doesn’t move flows; your account keeps only your purchases. Click on both devices to sync with Google Drive, or back up with Download All and import the .zip on the other device.

The Line and Circle tools aren’t available

The flow already has Step points. A flow uses either Step points or Line and Circle points. Start a new flow, or clear the points with .

I can’t add or change steps

The flow may be locked, or you may be in Review Mode. Look for in the navigation bar, or click Back to Edit.

“Role already taken” when joining a session

Your partner chose the same role. Switch to the other role, then join again.

An MP4 export is slow or stops

Keep the tab open and in front while the video renders. For flows with many steps, choose a faster Video Duration in Export Settings to make the video shorter.

I don’t hear callouts

Turn up your device’s volume and check that it isn’t muted. Callouts use your device’s built-in voice and play only during practice.
